The Ashtabula County Board of Commissioners is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Fitchet of Conneaut to the Ohio State Emergency Response Commission for a term beginning April 18, 2018.  Michael will be serving in a seat that represents local government/municipalities.

Michael has served as the county’s Emergency Management Agency director for over four years after 40 years of service with the Ashtabula Township Fire Department which included 33 years as chief. In addition, Michael currently serves as a member of North Kingsville Village council and is an active participant in numerous endeavors throughout the community.

The Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA) was passed by Congress in 1986. EPCRA was included as Title III of the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) and is sometimes referred to as SARA Title III. EPCRA provides for the collection and availability of information regarding the use, storage, production and release of hazardous chemicals to the public and emergency responders in your community. The law promotes a working relationship among government at all levels, business and community leaders, environmental and other public interest organizations, and individual citizens to improve hazard communications and emergency planning.

In 1988, the Ohio General Assembly passed Substitute Senate Bill 367. This law, Chapter 3750 of the Ohio Revised Code (ORC), provides for the implementation of EPCRA in Ohio. The administrative body for the implementation of Chapter 3750 is the State Emergency Response Commission (SERC).

“We are proud of Mike Fitchet’s work for us with the Ashtabula County Emergency Management Agency. Emergency preparedness is important for us at both the local and state level and we are pleased that Mike will have a seat at the table as we work on issues such as these throughout Ohio,” Commissioner Whittington stated.

“I appreciate the opportunity this appointment gives us to extend our counties voice to the State level and represent our County and its citizens moving forward,” Ashtabula EMA Director Michael Fitchet stated. “I am looking forward to getting started next month at the June SERC meeting in Columbus. I want to thank the Board for their continued support in myself and the agency to take on this position,” he added.

“Mike has been a great asset to our county and I know he will be to this board.  His extensive background and knowledge will provide great insight and leadership at the state level and make sure our interests and concerns here in Ashtabula County are well represented, Commissioner Ducro said.”

“I’m pleased to have nominated Michael Fitchet to serve in this role on SERC representing local government on behalf of the County Commissioners Association of Ohio,” said County Commissioner Casey Kozlowski. “One of our goals has been to push for greater representation in Columbus where many decisions are being made that impact us here in Ashtabula County. I’m pleased that Michael was selected and am confident that he will serve us well.”
